Background

Border Knowledges examines the impact of new technologies and internationalisation on education, and the ways in which national and cultural borders effect the movements of people and knowledge.

Our overarching concern is how increasingly globalized modern knowledge systems transform social, economic and cultural conditions of life around the globe. The title ‘Border Knowledges’ highlights how these transformations work across and beyond national borders, as well as the boundaries that exist between disciplines, institutions and ways of knowing.

The project is primarily situated within the Globalism Institute which undertakes engaged research into globalisation, transnationalism, nationalism and cultural diversity. It seeks to understand and critically evaluate current directions of global change, with an emphasis on the cultural implications of political and economic transformation.

The Institute is the public face of a university-wide research strength in globalisation and cultural diversity at RMIT University, Melbourne. It was initiated in 2000 with an extended period of consultation and development and was formally inaugurated in 2002 with the brief to develop and manage research projects involving consortia of academics, researchers and consultants from diverse backgrounds.

The Border Knowledges project has been assisted through an RMIT Research Infrastructre Funding grant in 2004-06.
